One of the classical questions in anthropology is how to understand apparently irrational beliefs, for instance in magic and witchcraft, and the harm caused by anti-witchcraft movements and cargo cults. Can some of the theories that anthropologists developed to explain these phenomena help us to understand modern myths about health, apocalyptic cults and conspiracy theories?
