Dear Colleagues,Welcome to the Center for Social Anthropology (VMU) research seminar series of the fall term 2024.We are inviting you for the research seminar Cultural Psychiatry and Anthropology: Trends and ChallengesPresenter: Dr. Daiva Bartušienė (Vytautas Magnus University)Date: October 11 2024, 2:00 p.m.Place: Faculty of Social Sciences, Jonavos Street. 66, Room 324Abstract of the presentation:One of the main focus and goal of the presentation is to give some highlights on a very specificsubfield in medical anthropology - cultural psychiatry. We will look over it’s global trends andtendencies in current research. By sharing my personal and academic experiences of doingethnographic fieldwork in autism community I’ll try to reflect and stimulate a discussion aboutwhat does it mean to do a fieldwork in the field of neurodiversity and not identifying yourself asa neurodivergent person. Also by giving some examples I’ll talk about challenges that emergewhen the fieldwork is done by anthropologist who is on the autism spectrum and whatmethodological challenges may arise from this particular situation.Also the phenomenon of decolonization in psychiatry will be partially touched upon, and one ofthe most prominent consequences of this phenomenon – self-advocacy culture.
